Mahj Joy

Hi! My name is Heather, and my husband and I own The Portal Downtown. I wanted to play American Mahjong for the longest time and could not find a teacher. So I started learning how to play online and made him play with me too, so I could start teaching others and helping to grow our Mahjong community.

Mahjong at The Portal Downtown is so much fun -- we have gongs that you get to sound when you get Mahjong. We laugh a lot and become friends.

I teach Mahjong 101 classes on the first Tuesday of every month and Mahjong 102 classes on the second Tuesday of every month. These classes fill up fast because I limit the numbers to ensure everyone is able to learn. We also have casual open play and as well as organized social play events.

Classes and Events

Mahjong 101

Learn the rules of American Mahjong, understand the National Mahjong League card and play your first game.

Mahjong Learning Series

The Mahjong Learning Series includes Mahjong 101, Mahjong 102 which focuses on the Charleston and selecting your best category along with guided play and our monthly themed Mahjong social event.

Open Play

Open play is a casual event where you can come and connect with other Mahjong players. It's held every Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. (except for our Monthly Social on the third Tuesday) and with few exceptions because of holidays and school breaks.

Monthly Socials

We have a monthly social that features an event theme with prizes for most Mahjongs, most points and best dressed on theme. This organized event with simple scoring is on held on the third Tuesday of each month with exceptions for holidays and school breaks.
